volunteers culling plantsVolunteers are absolutely essential to the operation of the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Typically, more than 20,000 hours of volunteer work are recorded annually, with an estimated value of more than $250,000. Many more volunteer hours go unreported each year.

Volunteers assist us daily, weekly (Visitor Center, maintenance) or during special events and festivals. Volunteers are often the first-point-of-contact for individuals visiting the Refuge for the first time. Here are just a few examples of volunteer assistance:

  • Visitor Center (interact with public, sales, answer phone, etc.)
  • Nature Store (replenish stock, pricing, helping customers, and planning) volunteers are also friends
  • Environmental Education (assist with formal outdoor classroom on and off the Refuge, help in the Education Building, help teach children, or contribute behind-the-scenes)
  • WHO Festival, Monarch Butterfly Festival and other special events (interpretation, parking, food, music, helping visitors and more)
  • Citizen Science (monitor plants, animals, and water quality)
  • Maintenance Crew (work with facilities and in the field)

Never assume you lack the background, experience or skills to volunteer at the Refuge. Volunteers come from all sorts of backgrounds.
