of the St. Marks Light
A lighthouse keeper is a person responsible for tending and caring for a lighthouse, particularly the light and lens in the days when oil lamps and clockwork mechanisms were used. In the video below, John Roberts* reminds us that lighthouse keepers also saved lives.
There have been 21 keepers of the St. Marks Lighthouse, beginning with the first keeper, Samuel Crosby in 1830 through Alton Gresham in 1960, who was the last. Two of the keepers were women.
This list of all St. Marks Lighthouse keepers is posted inside the lighthouse
* John Roberts is the grandson of J. Y. Gresham, longest serving keeper of the St. Marks Lighthouse.
