SMNWR Flamingos

As I came into the refuge late this morning, the two adult flamingos on Stony Bayou 1 were in close proximity and the two juvies on that pool were off on their own.  The light from the road was terrible, so it was difficult to discern color.  The lone adult flamingo on Lighthouse Pool was obviously less richly colored than the refuge resident.  On the way out of the refuge mid-afternoon, both juvies and both adults were resting within several feet of each other on SB 1. One has to wonder what this gregariosness will lead to (for my fellow Clash fans, "Should I Stay or Should I Go" comes to mind).

With the afternoon light being much better, both of the adults were aligned similarly to the sun and it was apparent that one of them was much more richly colored and also appeared somewhat larger.  My assumption is that the more colorful bird is the resident. American Flamingo males, according to Birds of the World, are up to 20% larger than females.  If these Idalia birds stick around for a bit maybe more size comparisons can be made and we can at least guess that the SMNWR resident is a male.
