My name is Jaclyn Selden, and I graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation this past December. Growing up in a small home tucked into the woods on Maryland’s western shore, I’ve always held a love and fascination for the outdoors. I’d spend my days running through the forest, trying to identify bird songs and mammal tracks. As I got older I looked into what careers I could pursue in the future to be able to continue exploring as well as make a difference in protecting these areas and species of which I had grown so fond. My parents were reluctant at first; they wanted me to pursue a more “traditional” career path. But when I began volunteering with local Chesapeake Bay conservation efforts, they could see my passion and supported me fully.

I applied to a few schools in the Southeast decided upon UF for their incredible wildlife program. And I could not be happier with my decision. Through the Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society, I was able to volunteer with a number of agencies on a variety of projects: manatees, mice, gators, shorebirds, bears, and snakes. I wanted to expose myself to as many aspects of my field as possible and find my niche within it. I’ve found that enjoy both working in the field directly as well as engaging the public through environmental education. I volunteered with FWC, bringing juvenile alligators and native snake species into classrooms to teach children and get them excited and interested in the outdoors.

I am so grateful for this opportunity to work here at St. Mark’s National Wildlife Refuge. So far, everyone has been so kind and helpful, and I cannot wait to work alongside them. This experience will help me further develop my skills in the field and connect me to an impressive network of wildlife professionals, which will be indispensable as I continue my career. Thank you so much for providing me with this opportunity.
